You know what? In my short professional life I’ve been told to wear more makeup, put on a skirt and heels, not be too dressy, be more assertive, be less assertive, that I’m intimidating, and that I’m too timid. I’m too girly! I’m not girly enough! In other words, as long as I’m a woman, I can’t win. And stereotype-spreading crap like the document above doesn’t help.
Why can’t these “helpful” tips be just that? Tips on office conduct that’ll get you ahead? Why the insulting gendered bullshit? What about what men do to sabotage their careers? Is it so hard to say, “Be assertive, take credit for work you did, push the rules when you need to,” and not attach that advice to admonitions about how little ladyfolk always get these things wrong? I’m sick of being told that my chromosomes make me somehow wrong for the workplace. I’d rather be judged for my flaws, thank you, not the mythical flaws of my sex.
